Bionet Vegetable Conference 2025: Practical research in organic vegetable growing

06.+07.03.2025 | EVENT

On March 6 and 7, 2025, the Bionet Vegetable Conference took place in St. Pölten – an important meeting for gardeners, farmers, consultants and scientists involved in practical research in organic vegetable growing. The event not only offered exciting presentations and discussions, but also space for exchange and networking.

PFN vegetable growing group shares its findings

The PFN-Hessen was also represented: As part of the conference, Prof. Dr. Jana Zinkernagel (Hochschule Geisenheim University) presented results from the ÖkoBoden4Resilienz project. Her presentation highlighted the effect of different types of compost on soil structure and water retention compared to winter greening with winter wheat. The positive effects of composted manure and green waste compost on soil infiltration under dry conditions were particularly emphasized.

The results presented were met with great interest, particularly with regard to the significantly higher soil moisture at a depth of 40 cm under dry conditions. The subsequent discussion was characterized by practical questions, including the choice of manure, composting and incorporation into the soil.

A valuable exchange for practice

The Bionet Vegetable Conference was not only a platform for knowledge transfer, but also a place for practical exchange. The open dialog between science and practice was perceived as particularly valuable by many participants. The demand for further research results and a possible publication via thehorticultural information service Hortigate” show the great interest in the findings from the PFN.

With the many new impulses, the valuable discussions and the networking between organic vegetable growers from Germany and Austria, the conference was a complete success – and shows once again how important practical research is for the future of organic vegetable growing.
