Working Together for Sustainable Hazelnut Farming

This year, the 3rd Thuringian Hazelnut Day at the Horticulture Teaching and Research Center (LVG) in Erfurt not only provided an opportunity for professional exchange on all aspects of hazelnut cultivation, but also served as the perfect setting for the launch of a new project: Following official approval, Nuss IQ was unveiled for the first time.
Together with the project partners, the project team kicked off the upcoming work. At the same time, the event provided a good opportunity for an initial joint project meeting and to coordinate the next steps.
Practical Research for Hazelnut Cultivation
At the heart of Nuss IQ is the question of how hazelnut cultivation can be further developed through new insights and practical approaches. Among other things, the targeted supply of micronutrients to the plants plays an important role in this.
In the coming months, studies will be conducted in collaboration with the participating field and research partners, and experience will be gathered under real-world conditions. The goal is to generate new knowledge that can contribute to the further development of sustainable hazelnut cultivation.
A Variety of Insights at Thuringia’s Hazelnut Day
The presentation on Nuss IQ fit well into the technical program of Hazelnut Day. During the presentations and the tour, numerous current issues in modern hazelnut cultivation were addressed.
Topics included, among others, optimized nutrient use, irrigation, biostimulants, pollination, and experiences with different varieties and cultivation methods. A special insight was also provided by an excursion into truffle cultivation.
In addition to the technical presentations, the event focused on personal exchanges between practitioners, consultants, and researchers. Various hazelnut varieties could be examined and compared right on site.
From Planning to Implementation
Now that the project has been approved, the practical work can begin. The first measures are set to begin shortly at the participating hazelnut orchards.
Nuss IQ is thus moving from the planning stage to implementation. In the coming months, we will provide insights into the field studies, the collaboration within the project, and the findings we have gathered.
The project is funded by the State of Hesse and the European Union as part of the European Innovation Partnership (EIP-AGRI).
