Eco-Field Days 2025
Hesse practical research network presents innovative approaches for water-conserving agriculture
13.05.2025 | PRESS RELEASE
On June 18 and 19, 2025 it’s that time of year again: the Öko-Feldtage open their doors – this time at Wassergut Canitz in Saxony. The event will feature an exciting specialist program and a diverse exhibition where over 320 exhibitors will present a wide range of forward-looking solutions for water-conserving agriculture. This year, the practical research networks of Hesse (PFN Hessen), Rhineland-Palatinate (Leitbetriebe Ökologischer Landbau RLP) and Bavaria (OekoNet) will also be represented with a joint stand – including demonstration plots where practical research approaches and innovations can be experienced directly in the field.
Focus on water protection
The main theme of this year’s Organic Field Days is the sustainable use of water in agriculture. The organic farm Wassergut Canitz has been practising organic farming in the drinking water catchment area for over 30 years and therefore offers the ideal stage for this topic. Against this backdrop, PFN Hessen will be presenting its approaches to water-conserving agriculture in two exciting guided tours of the stand. On Wednesday, June 18 at 2 p.m., the topic will be “Nitrogen dynamics and humus build-up: ploughing strategies for catch crops put to the test”. Hesse-wide test results and demo plots on site will be used to show how nitrogen can be retained in the soil-plant system through optimized ploughing strategies for catch crops. On Thursday, June 19, the guided tour “Practical solutions against drought and soil erosion” will also be offered at 2:00 pm. Based on research results from four Hessian locations, measures to improve the water retention capacity of the soil will be presented. In addition, demonstration plots on site and practical tests carried out in 2024 will provide an insight into how cover crops in the form of undersown crops or catch crops can be integrated into vegetable cultivation systems. Visitors will thus gain a practical insight into Hessen’s innovative strength in the field of groundwater protection and sustainable agriculture.
Practical research networks present innovative methods
At the joint stand of the practical research networks from Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate and Bavaria (stand number B4.8), you can find out first-hand what is currently being researched and how innovative solutions are being developed together with agricultural practice, science and advisory services. Numerous posters and display walls will provide insights into current projects and planned plans. In two exhibition tents, you can expect not only well-founded information, but also a direct exchange with experienced experts – an ideal opportunity to gain inspiration for your own work and to network.
