Interested in joining the PFN Hesse? There is still room for two farms in the pig farming group.
Research topic: Use of optimised clover grass and lucerne silage and pellets in organic pig fattening. In organic pig fattening, a needs-based protein supply with regional feedstuffs represents a major challenge. Close cooperation between research and practice is required in order to optimally utilise the potential of clover grass and lucerne as animal feed and to make it usable in practice! As PFN Hesse, we want to tackle this topic in collaboration with organic farms in Hesse, advisors and researchers from the Thünen Institute of Organic Farming and the University of Kassel.
The following question is to be analysed: How much concentrated feed can be saved by using optimised silage (cutting time, wilting, etc.) or regionally produced pellets from small-seeded legumes on organic farms in Hesse?
What is planned exactly? In the first year of the project, the farm’s usual feeding practice is analysed. In the two following project years, each farm will either choose to feed with its own ‘optimised’ silage (produced under the guidance of the Thünen-OL) or with regionally produced pellets. With this trial set-up, the advantages of the alternative feeding systems are analysed in a practice-based manner. The working time, travelling expenses, use of machinery and land for the participation in the Farmers-based Research Network will be remunerated!
