Project information
The proportion of organic pig farms in Hesse is low, as it is throughout Germany, which is why strategies are needed to make domestic pig fattening sustainable in order to meet local demand through regional, resource-efficient pork production. The crop rotation practiced in organic farming with fine-seeded legumes, such as clover and alfalfa, offers potential for using these plants as wholesome feed in pig fattening. Optimum utilization of this resource available in the farm cycle could reduce feed costs, close protein gaps and improve animal health.
The planned project, which was developed from practical experience in the pig farming project group of the Hesse Practical Research Network (PFN), aims to evaluate the production and feeding of on-farm silage and green fodder from fine-seeded legumes on pig farms and to test their practical benefits as a source of protein. In addition to organic pig farms, the project group is made up of advisors from the Landesbetrieb Landwirtschaft Hessen (LLH) and the Bioland association.
